- PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test. A blood sample is taken to measure the level of
PSA, a protein made by the prostate, in the blood. Typically found in small quantities,
elevated levels may be an indicator of the presence of prostate cancer or other prostate
disorders. PSA is not a unique indicator of prostate cancer, but may also detect
prostatitis or benign prostatic hyperplasia. - DRE (Digital Rectal Exam) When necessary, the doctor will perform a manual exam of the
prostate, examining the prostate for any irregularities in size, shape, and texture. - The PSA test and DRE can be used to detect prostate cancer when no symptoms are
present. They can help catch the disease at an early stage when treatment is more
effective and potentially has fewer side effects
